Did you know that during your J-1 internship in America, besides your hourly wage, tips are a crucial asset for those in the hotel and restaurant industry?
The tipping culture here isn’t just a ‘token of appreciation,’ it’s a ‘custom.’ Today, KPB will take you on a deep dive into how tips are given in America and how much extra income you can earn from it.
1. Why Do Americans Tip?
In America, service staff (servers, bellhops, bartenders) receive base wages that may not be very high. Therefore, “tips” are a primary source of income that reflects the quality of service. If we provide good service, smile, and are attentive, the tips we receive may be higher than our hourly wage.
2. Standard Tipping Rates
- Restaurants (Sit-down): Typically 15% – 22% of the bill (if the service is exceptional, it may reach 25%+).
- Buffet: Approximately $1
- $2 per person for clearing plates.
- Bartenders: $1 – $2 per drink or 15-20% of the total bill.
- Bellhop / Porter: $2 – $5 per bag (the heavier the bag, the more you get).
- Housekeeping: $2 – $5 per night (placed on the pillow or bedside table).
3. Understanding Tip Pool vs. Tip Out Systems
- For J-1 workers, it’s important to understand the tipping system at each establishment.
- Tip Pooling → All tips from everyone in the shift are collected and then averaged according to the hours worked. (Fair for Everyone)
- Tip Out → Front-of-house staff (Servers) must share a percentage of their tips with back-of-house staff (such as Bussers, Runners, or in some cases, Kitchen Staff).
4. Life-Changing Extra Income
Let’s do a quick calculation: If you’re a server in a busy restaurant and your sales per shift are $1,000, if you get an average of 20% in tips, you’ll earn an extra $200 per day (not including your hourly wage). This is why F&B or Front Office jobs in tourist states like Florida (Miami) or California are so popular.
Tips for J-1 applicants to get big tips:
- Service with a Smile: Always smile and make eye contact with guests.
- Speed & Accuracy: Work efficiently and avoid serving mistakes.
- Personal Touch: Remember guests’ names or recommend favorite dishes fluently.
- Kitchen Communication: Coordinate effectively with the kitchen team.
