If your 10-year Green Card (Permanent Resident Card) is about to expire, don’t let it lapse! Here’s what you need
to know to renew it and maintain your lawful permanent resident (LPR) status in the United States.
1. What You Need to Do: File Form I-90
Renewing a 10-year Green Card isn’t complicated, but you must use the correct form.
- Main Form: Use Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card.
(Important!) If you hold a 2-year conditional Green Card, you must file Form I-751 to remove conditions – not Form I-90. - When to File: Submit your application within 6 months before your Green Card expires.
- How to File: You can apply online through your USCIS account or by mail. (Online filing is usually faster and more convenient.)
2. Estimated Costs (Latest Update)
The total cost for renewing your Green Card (Form I-90) includes USCIS fees as follows:
- Filing Fee:
– Online filing: approximately $415 USD
– By mail: approximately $465 USD
- Biometrics Fee: No separate charge — it’s already included in the Form I-90 filing fee.
- Attorney Fees (optional): Vary depending on the service provider.
Important Tip: Fees are subject to change. Always verify the latest rates on the official USCIS Fee Schedule before submitting your application.
After You File
Receipt Notice (Form I-797C): Confirms that USCIS has received your application.
Biometrics Appointment: USCIS will schedule a time for fingerprinting, photographs, and signature collection at your local Application Support Center (ASC).
Temporary Status: Your I-797C receipt notice serves as temporary proof of your lawful permanent resident status, allowing you to work and travel legally while your new card is being processed.
Receive Your New Card: Once approved, your new 10-year Green Card will be mailed to the address you provided.
