Rights and Responsibilities as a Green Card Holder

Once you receive your Green Card (Permanent Resident Card), you gain certain rights and responsibilities similar to U.S. citizens:

✅ Rights:

Right to live and work permanently in the U.S.
You can work for any employer in the U.S. and are not obligated to remain with the sponsor who petitioned for your Green Card (although it’s generally advisable to stay with your original employer for a reasonable period).

Freedom to travel in and out of the U.S.
You can re-enter the U.S. without needing a new visa, as long as your Green Card is valid and you do not stay abroad for extended periods without proper documentation.

Access to education
You are eligible to attend public schools and pay in-state tuition rates at colleges and universities in the state where you reside.

Access to certain social benefits
Such as Social Security and Medicare, provided you have worked and paid taxes for the required period.

Eligibility to sponsor certain family members
You can petition for some family members to obtain Green Cards and join you in the U.S.

Pathway to U.S. citizenship
After holding a Green Card for 5 years and meeting other requirements, you may apply for naturalization.

Obey all U.S. laws
Just like all U.S. citizens, you must follow federal, state, and local laws.

File and pay taxes
You are required to file income tax returns with the IRS and state tax agencies (if applicable).

Carry your Green Card at all times
You must have your valid Green Card with you to prove your immigration status if requested by authorities.

Report any address changes to USCIS
You must notify USCIS within 10 days of moving to a new address.

Register with Selective Service
If you are a male between the ages of 18 and 25, you are required to register for the Selective Service.
